      Konnichiwa,
Finding this site feels so surreal. I never thought I would come across so much about Mitsubishi’s design. I want to sincerely thank you for archiving, creating, and showcasing such an amazing collection of Mitsubishi’s incredible design journey. This is truly amazing!

I’m an automotive design engineer currently working at Honda America, and I previously worked at the Chrysler design studios. Discovering this site brought back so many memories…

I grew up with a white 1977 Galant Sigma—it was my parents’ car. My dad bought it brand new, it was ordered by the official Mitsubishi importer inside Iran, and it was shipped from Japan to Iran back in 1977. After the 1979 revolution and the war with Iraq, buying a new car was no longer an option, so my parents kept that car for 21 years! My entire childhood and adolescent years were spent in that car, I learned how to drive in it. I used to take it apart and learn about its components.

I still have the original brochure of the car, which I’ve kept all these years. I always wanted to know who designed it and where it was created. I’ve always thought Mitsubishi’s designs were so unique and cool. The Galant Sigma was a significant part of my life, and I truly wish we still had it. Sadly, my parents had to sell it to cover the cost of our plane tickets when we moved to the U.S. That car served us faithfully for all those years and even helped us start a new chapter in America.

That Sigma will always be with me—it holds a special place in my heart. I’ll be forever grateful to Mitsubishi for that beautiful car! Thank you again for sharing all these photos!.

Hi Kiyoshi, do you have any idea about the story behind the symbolism of the Pajero ‘cat’ logo as seen here: https://pt.pinterest.com/pin/385550418073912944/

      Loved reading your posts.

      Thank you from Australia,
      Tasia

        Hi Tasia,
It’s a nice surprise! The logo is what I designed nearly 50 years ago, and I haven’t seen it since. I symbolized the cat as I wanted to make the name Pajero popular soon. Thank you very much for finding this.
By the way, the 2nd gen. Pajero story is coming soon, and I hope you enjoy it.

        1. Tasia says:

Thank you so much! I appreciate that 🙂
Very excited for the next gen.

The mentioned models would become interesting articles. We want to work on them in the future. Thank you for your interest in our site.

Can these designs be printed on A4 or purchased?

      1. Kiyoshi Honda says:

I’m sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
Unfortunately, we do not provide or sell images of our content.
        I appreciate your understanding.

Can you guys shed light on the Starion-stallion confusion? Maybe some insider information that only people like you would know. Were they just messing with us Americans? If so i think that’s hilarious and exactly why I love Mitsubishi.

      1. Starion is a coined term as you may know but I don’t know why they came up with such comfusing word implying stallion. But at least it was a hot topic.

Love this website, and will be coming back to it often. Thank you guys so much, i have been looking for the people who created my favorite cars. can we please get a 3000gt story, and a 2&3g story as well? I’m researching them for a video I’m making. I will always drive Mitsubishi. You guys are the reason i love this brand. Thank you for your years of dedication. I’m sorry about what they did to the eclipse. I’m currently on a mission to get them to go back to their glory days making beautiful fun cars again (it’s not going well and they have no idea I exist. I am organizing the community. if you see this and drive a 3g eclipse, dm me on Instagram or tik tok @the3gcommunity we have a huge discord with people all over the world!

      1. Thank you for your compliment. The 3000 Gt was the biggest sportscar that Mitusbishi ever produced and Mitsunishi was at its hight in that period. We would like to post an article about the 3000 Gt in the near futur for sure.
I wish your mission will succeed despit the difficulties. Good Luck!

I really enjoy this website, the stories are great and the pre production images are even greater.

Just wondering if there’s any development pictures and stories from the development of the 5th generation Galant? It’s one of my top favorite Mitsubishi designs. I own a 1990 Mitsubishi V3000 SEi (the New Zealand exclusive model with the 6G72 V6) and I love it to bits.

      1. Kiyoshi Honda says:

Thank you for your comment. At the moment the story of 5th gen. Galant is not ready yet but I hope we can post it someday. We have plenty of upcoming stories.
I didn’t know about the Mitsubishi V 3000 but learned it is a combination of Galant Sigma and Galant Sigma Hardtop and was produced in New Zealand. How interesting! I hope you keep on enjoying your V3000.

fantastic site! really enjoyed reading the model backstories and seeing the sketches, renderings and alternate design proposals.. my personal favorite so far has to be the notchback starion.
i hope to see more posts in the future, would love a design story on the eighth-generation galant & legnum. they’re becoming less and less common over here in the philippines – as older cars do, but i’m determined to get my hands on a nice example someday.

      1. Akinori Nakanishi says:

        Dear Dino San,

        Many thanks for your comment.
I am very happy to hear you are enjoying this site.

Also thanks for your comment regarding the eighth-generation Galant &Legnum.
I was the exterior design leader of these models I would love to write the design story in the future.

I hope you get a nice example of the car soon!

        Best Regards,
        Akinori Nakanishi

Great website, I loved reading about the Galant Sigma, I have owned a 79 in the early eighties and I recently bought a 77 1600 GL, turns out to be the oldest registerd one in the Netherlands.

      1. The 79 model was a late model with the chrome moldings removed and I designed it. The front grille design of the early model was a little more dynamic and I like it. Wish you keep and enjoy your Sigma as long as possible.

      2. John Duane says:

        Great site
are there any details available on how many Galant Lambda/Sapporos were produced by Mitsubishi

    10. amirhossein emami says:

well done, this website is awesome, my father had a Galant sigma & really enjoyed reading about that dreamy car, I hope some day I could afford coming japan to visit Mitsubishi museum.
I am looking forward to know from Mitsubishi designers specially about early 90’s designs.
      best regards
      Amho emami from Iran

      1. Thank you very much for your message. Regarding the Galant Sigma, I designed the front grille and was very much inspired by the words of the president, “Our design should be simpl, clear and sharp”. There is no such president who can really lead the designers.
I hope you can come to Japan some day.
About the early 90’s designs, We are planning to post the Diamnte and Sigma story in near future.
        Best,

It’s a nice surprise to know you own Colt 800! I suggest you check “60s Mitsubishi Colts Australia” on Facebook. They have information about buying and selling Colts.
